Avon Valley Students Explore Jobs and Careers
Students visit NEC for The Skills Show 2017
Over forty students from The Avon Valley School and Performing Arts College travelled to The NEC,
Birmingham, for the nation’s largest skills and careers event organised by World Skills UK.
At the event, which filled two exhibition halls, the students were able to learn about a large range of jobs
and career pathways from engineering and construction to healthcare and hospitality. During the day the
students were also able to talk with industry representatives and careers guidance experts.
In addition, the students attending the show were able to ‘have a go’ at a selection of practical skills and
see demonstrations from real people doing real jobs.
Dan Phelan, Achievement Leader, said “In a few months’ time our Year 8 students will be selecting their
GCSE options; attending the Skills Show has given these students an insight about where their option
choices may lead in the future.”
Year 8 student, Owen Winter, said “I really enjoyed the Skills Show because I was able to see what
different jobs involve and I got to speak to people about their job. In the future I think I’d like to be a me-
chanic.”
Alison Davies, Headteacher, commented “Our school’s careers programme gives our students the
opportunity to think about where their education might lead them. Events like the Skills Show also highlight
the huge range of opportunities that are available to young people if they work hard and aim high.”
