MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD TEACHER
Dear Parents and Carers
This week I am pleased to have launched my Head
Teacher’s Speech Writing Competition which will
take place over the next fortnight. Through a series
of assemblies, I have spoken to all of the house
groups and have
encouraged
our
students to ‘Make
their voice heard’
about a subject that
matters deeply to
them.
We
have
looked at clips of
famous
speeches,
ranging
from
Churchill, via JFK and
Margaret Thatcher, to
Michelle Obhama and
Martin Luther King, looking at the techniques that
people use to share their beliefs and passions, and
to encourage and motivate others. I have asked the
students to think about a subject that matters to
them, be it at international, national, local or school
level, and to write a speech that shares their views.
I would be most grateful if you would encourage your
child to take part in this, talking through the issue
that they have chosen to write about and taking an
interest in what they have to say. I look forward to
reading a wide variety of interesting speeches after
the closing date on November 18th and to publishing
the best of what I receive in a later newsletter. I
know that you are all aware of how important it is
that
students
develop
independence of thought, good
research skills and good literacy
skills; this competition is an
ideal opportunity to get involved
in an activity which does just
that.
