HISTORY As we approach the end of the year the History department has been working on a wide range of subjects with students. Year 7 have been looking at the joys and perils of life in the Middle Ages, including the Magna Carta, medicine and some truly horrible jobs. They will then start an in-depth look at the Black Death and the ways in which it changed society forever. Year 8 have emerged from the smog and toil of the Industrial Revolution, where they looked at inventions, disease and social issues. They are now beginning ‘Slavery’ and will study both the causes and consequences of this terrible trade. They will also examine the fight against slavery and how it was ended in many countries. Year 9 have plunged from World War One and trench warfare straight into World War Two. They will be studying a range of key events of the war and deciding on the importance of each event as they go. Year 10 have spent the entire term grappling bravely with coursework and the end is now in sight. They will shortly be carrying out their final write-ups and saying a fond farewell to propaganda (at least until Year 11!) COMPUTING HOUSES Our Year 11 students have now completed the vast majority of their GCSE exams, and will hopefully enjoy their prom on Friday 24th June. It will then be a case of waiting until August when the students will receive the GCSE grade they have worked so hard for. Over the last few weeks it has been wonderful to see our remaining students working hard and living up to the school’s values. Over 60 Year 10 students have written letters applying to be prefects and senior student leaders within their House, a number of students also applied to be the next Head Boy or Head Girl. In addition many Year 9 students applied to become mentors who will work closely with the new Year 7 students on Induction Day, and again from September 2017. A small number of Year 7 students will also be working with our new intake. In recent weeks many students have got involved in the House rounders and bake off competitions, which is pleasing. Soon students will be able to show their athletic prowess when they compete for their House during Sports Day. Finally, Year 10 students have made a pre-visit to their work experience placement to find out what they’ll be doing when they start in a few weeks’ time. Students across the school have been working hard in Computing as we progress towards the end of the academic year. Year 7s - Over the last term students have been developing their programming skills by creating games through the Kodu package. In addition to this students have finished the year by working on Microsoft Photostory in order to create a multi-media product using still images. Year 8s - Many of the year 8's have opted to continue their studies next year in the subject by selecting either ICT or Computer Science. In this final term the students have been manipulating sound files and creating animation. Year 9s - I am delighted that we will continue to teach many talented students next year in both GCSE Computer Science and GCSE ICT. All of the students in the year group have finished the year by computer programming a web page using HTML The Year 10 GCSE ICT students will undertake a mock exam for theory component of the course in order to asses their knowledge for when they are taught the theory for exams next year. The controlled assessment work is progressing well with many students currently working at an impressive level. The GCSE Computer Science students have been preparing for their mock exam in lessons. They have been set homework to revise and should have been using their notes and past exam papers to prepare.
