At Avon Valley School, we encourage you to read
and experience a wide range of texts and types of
writing, growing in complexity as you progress
through the key stages. Regular reading provides
you with opportunities for independent discovery
and curiosity. It also promotes a culture of literary
consistency and helps develop your understanding
of complex language and its origins. Reading is a
vital component of academic progress across all
curriculum areas, not just in English.
The school library is an excellent resource centre.
We have thousands of books to suit every ability.
Our shelves are packed full of quality reading
experiences just waiting to be discovered. Every
student is welcome to choose a book to read in
school or take home. All we ask is that you take
care of it and bring it back when it is due. Mrs
Westwood, our school Librarian, can help you find
your perfect book.
Planting the seeds early in KS3 ensures you will
reap the rewards in KS4. In your GCSE, you will be
examined on analysing unseen texts. As you read

KS4 Students must have: Year 9
An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley. AVS price £2.
The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare. AVS price £3.
Year 10 War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. AVS price £5.
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (optional)
Students will make notes in and annotate their books during English lessons. Self-annotated copies provide an
excellent, mobile revision tool that are crucial when revising for assessments. All KS4 texts for sale will feature
in students’ GCSE examinations.
KS4 books have just been delivered and are now available to purchase. Please ask your English teacher or
see Mrs Walsh in the Faculty Office.
Pupil premium students are required to fill in a purchase request form – these are available from Mrs Anstee in
Student Services.
