GCSE History
GCSE students have recently been studying a module of work on Nazi Germany . The Topic of Nazi Germany , whilst interesting , does raise some difficult discussions and reflections on themes such as the Holocaust . So , when Rugby library contacted the History team to tell them about a talk being given by Thea Coleman-Tielrooy many of our students and staff signed up immediately . This free event will offer an opportunity to hear Thea ’ s remarkable story of how she evaded the Gestapo in Holland during the Second World War . It is hoped that students and staff who are able to attend this event will be able to enrich class discussions with their invaluable insight .
The next set of PPE ’ s for year 11 are fast approaching it is strongly advised that students attend . History revision is every Wednesday 3.15 – 4.15 in SS4 .

Year 7 students have just completed an in-depth study of the Medieval times , they have learned interesting facts about life in medieval villages and the Black Death . Did you know that medieval people used snail slime to treat burns ?! They would take a live snail and rub its slime against the burn to aid healing .

Happy New Year . It seems like only yesterday that the Year 7 students joined us . Now they have completed their first term and have integrated themselves successfully into the Avon Valley community . They , and all the other students , have now had their first progress check of the school year , with information relating to their effort and attainment so far this term . For many students , this will have been a very positive experience , highlighting their positive attitude to learning and homework , and the progress made . For some students however , receiving the progress check is a wake-up call , a reminder that we are here to learn and make progress . If your child ’ s approach to learning requires improvement , or they are not making expected progress , or you have concerns , then please contact your child ’ s class teacher in the first instance .
At the other end of the school ’ s range , the National Citizenship Service visited Year 11 students on Wednesday 17 January to outline the amazing opportunities the organisation offers students during the summer holidays . Many Avon Valley students have attended in previous years and had an amazing time , as well as developing skills and friends for life .
