Options Evening
Options Evening is always an enjoyable and well attended evening within the school calendar, and for the
last two years, options have been selected in Year 8. Once again this year, the school has strived to
maintain a broad and balanced curriculum, meeting the interests of the students with the demands of the
future economy and post-16 requirements. Over 20 different courses are on offer in a range of disciplines
and a range of different qualifications, be it GCSE, Technical Award, OCR national and BTEC. All
qualifications open doors to future study and employment, when coupled with hard work and a student
striving to achieve their very best grade.
Options Evening is fascinating to observe. There are students determined on a future career pathway and
families sit down and discuss the options and immediately select the appropriate courses that will help lead
to the chosen profession. Other students have no idea as to future plans and thus selecting a broad and
balanced curriculum keeping all doors open. The options process is such that every student must study
Maths, English Language, English Literature, PSHE, RE, PE, Synergy Science (2 GCSEs of Physics,
Chemistry and Biology) and at least one EBacc subject (a Modern Foreign Language, Computer Science,
Geography or History). Alongside the core curriculum, options range from subjects studied in Years 7 and 8
as well as new courses such as Sociology, Psychology, Media Studies, Business Studies, Sport Studies
and Health and Social Care.
During the evening, students and parents/carers are divided as follows.
Students in 8ADu, 8SBe, 8AMu, 8Aka: to go directly to the theatre at 5.30 p.m. for the Headteacher’s
presentation.
Students in 8MGo, 8APy, 8IGo, 8Sal: to tour the option presentations from 5.30 p.m. and to hear the
Headteacher’s presentation at 6 p.m.
