I struggle with getting in too close to a family with a wide angle. Like I mentioned previously, it’s their moment, not mine, and I don’t want to be intrusive. I have, however, captured some pretty amazing moments at homecomings using my wide angle, which is why I still use it for one of the squadrons. It does permit me to capture more of the scene, and include the jets in the photos, all of which can add to the image, depending on how you frame them up.

One other thing I would like to mention is that I photograph these homecomings for the families. I travel to Virginia Beach on my own dime, and provide my images free of charge to all the families that request them. I also make up CDs for the squadrons for each member flying in (usually 24 copies). It is my way of saying thank you for all you do. (Continued on page 54)
