Sassountsi Davit Square, which is located in the Erebouni district of Yerevan, is a must-visit destination. The metro from the Republic Square is a convenient means of transportation for this trip. In the center of the square stands the statue of Sassountsi Davit (Davit of Sasoun), a mythological hero of the Armenian folk epic poem. The central train station of Yerevan is located behind the square on Sevan Street. Sassountsi Davit metro station is also located on the square with the entrance on Tigran Mets Street.

The Sassountsi Davit statue is a masterpiece by prominent Armenian sculptor Yervand Kochar (1899 -1979)

and architect Michael Mazmanyan (1988-1971) who turned the character of the epic hero into a statue. The figure of Sassountsi Davit, astride his faithful steed

Qurkik Jalali, embodies the freedom-loving aspirations of the Armenian people over the centuries. His hands hold his sword of lighting, always ready to repel invaders. The water flows from the bowl above the pedestal which symbolizes the cup of patience of the Armenian people. If the water overflows, according to the epic story, Davit will rise again against the oppressors and enslavers. Read More
