Chess in Yerevan
Chess is very popular in Armenia. Although it is a small state with a population of around 3 million, today Armenia is considered to be a chess superpower. It has one of the highest numbers of chess grandmasters per capita. This game of strategy has been played in Armenia since the middle ages. Chess figures were found during archaeological excavations in the medieval Armenian capital of Dvin. However, chess in Armenia entered
into a professional development phase during Soviet times. Chess has become
especially popular since the 1960s, when in 1963 Armenian grandmaster Tigran Petrosian (1929-1984) became the World Chess Champion.
