Did you know?

The Khosrov State Reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in the world. Wildlife preservation and nature protection was practiced in Armenia since ancient times. Founded by King Khosrov III Kotak of Armenia (who ruled from 330-338 AD) in 334-338 AD, the reserve has a history of 1,700 years. The king’s reason to establish a protected forest was to improve the natural conditions of the cities of Artashat and Dvin and the adjacent territories, as well as to conserve and enrich the species of flora and fauna. The Khosrov forest also served as hunting and entertainment grounds for Armenian kings and the nobility. Evidence of these events is kept in the works of 5th century Armenian historians Movses Khorenatsi and Faustus of Byzantium.
