Mount Aragats
Hiking and Camping
The surroundings of Mount Aragats are full of historic sites and old churches. On a hiking trip to Mount Aragats, one passes along the way of the medieval Fortress of Amberd (Fortress in the Clouds) standing at an elevation of 2,300 m/7,546 ft. Close by is the 11th century church, Surb Astvatsatsin, and on the slope is the Byourakan Observatory , where one can take quick excursion-based courses in
astronomy and observation, or simply observe the most
interesting and beautiful space objects in the night sky.
Accommodations can be arranged at the Byourakan Rest
House. The next point of your hiking adventure is Lake Kari
(Stone Lake), also located on the slope of Mount Aragats (3,200 m/10,499 ft above sea level). From this base camp begins the hike to the summits of the mountain.
