The ruins of another capital city of historical Armenia, Dvin, are located 22 km/13.6 mi north of Khor Virap. There is also a museum where one can see the findings of the archaeological excavations of the territory of the city. The city of Dvin was founded in 335 by Khosrov III Kotak of Armenia and became the residence of the Armenian Arsacid Kings.

Being the capital of early Medieval Armenia, Dvin became a large commercial city. With a population of about 100,000, it became one of the most populous and wealthiest cities of the medieval world. After a major earthquake that devastated the city in 893 and the Arab and Seljuk invasions that later followed, the city began its decline before being completely destroyed by Mongols in 1236.
