5.2 Ashtarak
With a population of 21,600, the town of Ashtarak is the administrative center of the Aragatsotn marz. It is located about 20 km/12.4 mi northwest of Yerevan alongside the Kasagh River canyon. One of the oldest settlements in Armenia, the town is rich with old churches and historic sites like the Tsiranavor (built between the 13th-14th centuries), Spitakavor (built between the 5th-6th centuries), and Karmravor (7th century) churches and the medieval three arch bridge built in 1664 on the Kassakh River. The largest church in Ashtarak is St. Marine, which was founded in 1271 and is located in the center of the town.
