5.1 Yeghvard

The Yeghvard and Ashtarak regions of the Aragatsotn marz are located north of Yerevan and should be on one’s itinerary when visiting Yerevan’s surroundings. Yeghvard is located 15 km/9.3 mi north of Yerevan in the Kotayk marz. The two-story church, St. Astvatsatsin, built in 1301, stands tall in the town center. Mount Ara is clearly visible from Yeghvard as well. Covered with greenery, Mount Ara (2577 m) is a great place for lovers of hiking and camping. On the way up to the top of Mount Ara, one can explore the Tsaghkevank Church. The church is built in a cave with a spring fountain that is believed to be sacred and possess healing power. Picnic tables are available around this area. From the top of the mountain one can admire a magnificent view of the Biblical Mount Ararat.
