4.3 The Mother See of Holy Echmiatsin

Vagharshapat city was one of the historic capitals of Armenia and is the spiritual center for Armenians. The residence of the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Mother See of Holy Echmiatsin,

is located here. The Mother See of

Holy Echmiatsin is a kind of “Vatican of Armenia”, which includes a complex of religious-administrative, spiritual, cultural and educational

institutions and buildings around Echmiatsin Cathedral. Educational institutions within the complex of the Mother See include the Gevorkian Seminary (since 1874), which is

a theological institution of higher education, and the Garegin I Center of Theology and Armenology.

There are four museums located in the territory of the Mother Museum, the upper floor of the Veharan (the Residence of the Catholicos), and the Old Veharan (the former residence of the Catholicos).
