AUTONEWS - AA CLUB OF KENYA MAGAZINE – 31

Smarter strategies will improve Kenya ’ s mobility

Njeri Gichuhi , acting Director General of AA Kenya ( pictured above left ) attended a constructive and action-orientated FIA-ACTA Vision 2030 Workshop , focussing on defining the ACTA strategic vision for 2030 . This meeting was held in Johannesburg on March 2017 . Senior Thierry Willemarck , FIA Region I President , participated in the workshop that completed pre-workshop documents to ascertain the Club Status Quo ( Must Have ’ s ). This included a Business Plan and a Products and Services Matrix looking ahead to 2030 ; and the “ Readiness of Clubs ” ( Strategic Thrust ) using the Vision 2030 Club Self-Assessment Tool .

This exercise assisted in identifying key development gaps per Club . The individual Club information was then rolled up into an ACTA Status Quo and Readiness Overview , and provided some insight into what would need to be considered .
It was clear that the initiatves being carried by AA Kenya align with the global strategy and clearly Auto Clubs are the new disruptors . African is on the rise with many economy ’ s growing more than 5 % year on year .
Key aspects that ACTA region would need to strategize to maximise to influence growth opportunities are :
• Shifting demographics – 65 % of the African population will be younger than 35 by 2030 . AA Kenya will to adapt its offering and services , as well as business model , to meet the consumer preferences of Generation Y
( Millennials – currently between21 and 35 ).
• Rapid urbanisation – with a rise of more than 25 % of mega-cities and mega regions , hosting more than 60 % of Africans by 2030 . This will see growth in ride hailing , shared mobility , and that the new generations are prepared to forego vehicle ownership .
• A rising middle class , with a rising disposable income – owning a car is aspirational for this burgeoning middle class , who are looking to splurge on new passenger vehicles and for most , their first such purchase .
• Technological change – Africa has the highest mobile growth in the world ( reaching close to market saturation by 2020 ), and that connection to the Internet will become a basic right .
• 2nd Hand Vehicle market , including Boda Boda ’ s is an untapped market for the Auto Clubs . At the conclusion of the workshop , AA Kenya agreed on the critical success factors to ensure that the outcomes of the workshop are converted into action .
