However, the additional value that can be extracted from well-designed and carefully managed collaborations can be substantial. If the collaborations are well designed and implemented, a great deal of demonstrable and tangible value can be delivered over the short, medium and long term. It is not only possible but something of an imperative to ensure that short-term market conditions do not result in water dropping automatically to ‘Z’. Pressures to become more productive can be used to unlock cleverness in people and systems to deliver better short-term outcomes and to avoid medium term increases in costs and negative legacies. It is also an opportunity to invest judiciously in initiatives, such as improving the approvals processes that will position industry, government and communities for fast response when the market recovers. 1.
