Small Family Grower Pays off Recycling
Investment in 2 years
A small family greenhouse grower (9,000m2) in
Western Sydney has paid off an investment in recycling
his runoff in 2 years. AIS Greenworks and the NSW DPI

Greenworks designed the system to ensure that the
dam and the runoff water from the crop could be
utilised to minimise the reliance on Sydney Water and
also limit or even better, stop the run off of fertilisers
into the nearby waterways. Being able to use the water
that comes off the crop enables the grower to save
approx. 35% in water and 50% in fertiliser costs.
This coupled with the use of dam water for the grower
has minimised the reliance on Sydney water and
allowed for the payoff of this investment in 2 years.

The difficulties faced here are that the dam has a high
algal load and the return water from the coco peat media
is high in tannin and organic matter. To allow the reuse,
an Alga Stop was employed in the dam to kill the algae
and a Clearflow filter was employed to pick up any organic
material from the dam and the crop runoff to 18 micron
which allows the water to be treated by a UV system and
also an Aqua Hort® copper fertilisation system to ensure
there was no pathogen going back to the crop.

River, it was a unusually hot day, we were
all but finished when out of the river walked

foot on the cool concrete floor, I offered her a towel
but she wasn’t interested.

We have always taken great pride in our pump station
designs, “ergonomic” is a word not often used when
describing a Pump Station but it is something we have
always worked towards, I am amazed at the number of
systems that we have visited over the years where you have
to “step over” or “duck under” to get around a pump shed.
