Pollution loads increase proportionally with
the degree of urbanisation in the catchment
area. Stormwater pollutants can take several
forms such as gross pollutants or litter,
which can be easily visualised to fine
suspended solids, or nutrients, which cannot
be seen as they can be soluble in solution.
Regardless of the pollutant, in high concentrations or
quantities they can all have a profound detrimental effect
on both the flora and fauna within, or reliant on, the
receiving waterways. In order to manage these effects,
sustainable urban water management is implemented
through a process called Water Sensitive Urban Design
(WSUD). WSUD is a recognised technique in meeting
stringent water quality requirements for development
applications and with tightening of water quality policy and
regulation comes a new suite of technologies promising to
solve all our stormwater management issues. Most of the
technologies used in Australia have originated from North
America with varying degrees o b7V66W72
