City Deals Workshop
The City Deals session will run as a panel , following up discussions started at the Showcase and leveraging the case studies of Australian councils already involved in a City Deal – Townsville , Launceston and Western Sydney . We ’ ll also hear about the UK City Deals experience from Jonathon Carr-West , Chief Executive at Local Government Information Unit in London and LG Professionals Australia ’ s UK partner SOLACE .
Smart Cities Masterclass
Before Smart Cities was a Federal Government policy , it was a world-wide movement ! As a result , there is a vast treasure-trove of knowledge and learning to be exploited on what can be done to create and enable Smart Cities at both the local and national levels . At Congress this year , Adam Beck , founding Executive Director of Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand will deliver a masterclass on making cities more liveable , workable , and sustainable . Adam will focus on how to accelerate sustainable outcomes for cities via the adoption of technology , data-driven decision-making and intelligent design . He will discuss how capacity building and knowledge sharing can be leveraged to create policies and plans that harness and maximise the benefits of digital technology and intelligent design .
The Federal Government has called for transformative collaborations between multiple councils and technology industry partners that link closely with future plans for specific areas . The realism that comes almost part and parcel of working in local government over time can dampen expectations , however , as any decent app developer can tell you , expansion is doable , as long as you imagine it at the beginning . Which is to say , as the plans are created for any of the Smart City policy vehicles , build the vision of your best and brightest end-game , and then break it up into achievable-now sections to make a start .
