INTERNET INDUSTRY A S S O C I A T I O N In response, the IIA recently formed the National Online Security Council (NOSC) as part of its Online Security Initiative (OSI) in addressing the security of Australia’s internet and online infrastructure. The inaugural NOSC forum, which took place in October 2013 and brought together government and industry, highlighted a number of issues confronting governments, businesses and consumers in a digital world. Issues such as; resilience of critical infrastructure, single points of failure, the Internet of things, the increased sophistication of cyber criminals, the benefits of real-time information intelligence sharing, more efficient coordination of messages, earlier and more active involvement with industry on policy development, creating more secure products, better education and communication to the market and roadblocks between jurisdictions. While none of these issues may appear to be new or ground-breaking, a common theme emerging from the NOSC was the need to develop a common goal in order to; identify and prioritise the risks and potential solutions from local experience and information, share information and intelligence to improve awareness of cybersecurity activities and threats, and coordinate effort to efficiently act on an issue in a practical, timely and cost efficient manner. We should also not lose sight of the fact that the internet is built upon the freedom, creativity and innovation of users as an open platform. In striving to create a more secure online environment and take action against cyber criminals, our collective response must balance the rights of Australians to freely roam, create and interact on the internet, while protecting individuals’ right to privacy. The most effective way to achieve this collective outcome is for governments not to take unilateral actions to cyber-criminal activity where there is a lack of transparency of those actions.
