INTERNET INDUSTRY
A S S O C I A T I O N
In response, the IIA recently formed the National
Online Security Council (NOSC) as part of its Online
Security Initiative (OSI) in addressing the security of
Australia’s internet and online infrastructure.
The inaugural NOSC forum, which took place in
October 2013 and brought together government
and industry, highlighted a number of issues
confronting governments, businesses and
consumers in a digital world. Issues such as;
resilience of critical infrastructure, single points
of failure, the Internet of things, the increased
sophistication of cyber criminals, the benefits of
real-time information intelligence sharing, more
efficient coordination of messages, earlier and
more active involvement with industry on policy
development, creating more secure products,
better education and communication to the
market and roadblocks between jurisdictions.
While none of these issues may appear to be new
or ground-breaking, a common theme emerging
from the NOSC was the need to develop a
common goal in order to; identify and prioritise
the risks and potential solutions from local
experience and information, share information
and intelligence to improve awareness of
cybersecurity activities and threats, and
coordinate effort to efficiently act on an issue in a
practical, timely and cost efficient manner.
We should also not lose sight of the fact that
the internet is built upon the freedom, creativity
and innovation of users as an open platform.
In striving to create a more secure online
environment and take action against cyber
criminals, our collective response must balance
the rights of Australians to freely roam, create
and interact on the internet, while protecting
individuals’ right to privacy.
The most effective way to achieve this collective
outcome is for governments not to take
unilateral actions to cyber-criminal activity where
there is a lack of transparency of those actions.
People need to be able to trust the actions
of their government in prot ?????????????)???????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????????)??????????)%????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????()?????????????????????????????????????????)??????????????????????????%?????)????????????????????????????????????)?????????????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????)%??????????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????)??????????????????????????????????)????????????????????????????????Q???)??????????????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????)?????????)]?????????????????????????????????????)??????????????????????????????????)???????????????????????????????????????)????????????????%
