40 REGIONAL AIRPORTS Aviation is about networks. It is easy to focus on capital city airports when discussing the aviation transport network, and although certainly important, the regional airports far outstrip their larger cousins in number. A recent Australian Airports Association (AAA) report noted that there are over 2000 landing sites for aircraft in Australia, not all publicly accessible. Australia’s airports are fundamentally a community asset. In general, our capital city and largest regional airports are leased to and operated by the private sector, but remain owned by the Commonwealth Government. The overwhelming majority of all other Australian airports are owned and operated by the local government authority of the community they serve.
