Australia lays claim to 42 % of Antarctica yet , while China encroaches on our territory , most of the continent is officially off-limits to us , as well as unauthorised personnel from most other countries , which means even flying over certain areas is banned .

Antarctica remains one of the most isolated and mysterious places on the surface of our planet . The continent has a network of subglacial waterways , including the sixth-largest lake in the world , Lake Vostok , with a volume of about 1,300 cubic miles . It has been detected , but never reached by humans . At least half of the Antarctic – i . e . an area about the size of Australia or the USA – is a “ no-fly ” zone and civilian aircraft that have mistakenly ventured too close have been turned back by military jets – although sources are vague about their country of origin , the implication is that it ’ s the US . It is worth adding that a similar sized area in Russia is likewise never entered , so we can say that , along with most of our ocean floors , we know absolutely nothing about a sizeable area of the Earth ’ s surface .
To start out with , as a reference for what follows , let ’ s say that Australia , USA ( minus Alaska ) and Canada are all roughly the same size . Both Russia and Antarctica are each twice as big as any of these , as is South America ; Greenland is a quarter the size of China ( or about the same as Brazil ). All these countries have regions that are classed as mysterious , but Russia , Greenland and Antarctica have VAST areas , totalling millions of square kilometres that the world ’ s population knows zero about . More than half of Russia is essentially uninhabited . The
Kamchatka Peninsula , located in Northeast Siberia , is largely unexplored by humans . Similarly , Greenland ’ s Ice Sheet covers 80 % of it and although we know there is a hidden underworld a kilometre below it , no-one has been there yet . So it ’ s not surprising that we know so little about the sprawling mass of land at the South Pole .
Government nondisclosure continues and most likely will do so in the future . Around thirty nations now operate research stations bases on Antarctica , and scant information is given to the public about what exactly is going on there . The Antarctic Treaty demands scientific research and collaboration without a military presence - yet military units do visit the continent from time to time .
