Here the rocky and sandy coastline circles a sea pierced by 150 islands which were discovered by legendary Maori navigator Kupe and visited by Captain Cook in 1769 .

The legacy of an ancient , volcanic past is present with a spring providing a hot pool for two hours either side of low tide .
