AUGUST 2017 The Next Chapter | Page 9

“ Each change of season brings with it such excitement and opportunity for change .
This issue ’ s Annual Salute to Women in Education has been especially inspiring to me , as the stories we ’ ve collected from women regarding their “ most inspiring teachers ” have been the most powerful in the fifteen-year history of this issue .”

As I write this while sitting in my second-floor office on the corner of Irby and Evans in Florence , heat from the powerful summer sun radiates through each of the five large windows that cover most of the wall space . Even with the air conditioner blasting non-stop , I , being one of the coldest-natured women alive , am very warm . Well , that ’ s the polite , lady-like way of sharing that fact . You know just how hot it is and the word that would more accurately describe it . As my sweet aunt would say , “ It ’ s as hot as where all the bad people go .” That reminds me that I just ruined another tube of perfect pink lipstick by leaving it in my car where you know it lasted all of 2.3 seconds . It was that perfect shade of pink that you can spend half of forever in search of - not too pink , not too baby girl , not too beige , not quite nude , just the perfect hint of blush . Now , it ’ s gone . Feeling frazzled , I catch a glimpse of my reflection in my computer screen . I see my hair . It ’ s a frizzy mess , and for a second , I think of The Lion King . I look like Mufasa . As surely as the heat and humidity cause our hair to frizz within an inch of its life , before we know it , the heat will break , and the hint of a cool , fall breeze will float in from some place less torturous . Teachers and kids will go back to school , the first snap of the football will be heard across a packed stadium , mums will go on sale , pumpkin patches will spring up on church lawns , Labor Day passes , white shoes go in the back of the closet , and fall will be here !

THE NEXT CHAPTER is a farewell to summer and a look ahead to fall with our Annual Salute to Women in Education . If you noticed AUGUST on this issue , you may have spent a few moments looking around in confusion , wondering what happened to July . Before you scratch your head another time , let me explain . You haven ’ t missed a thing , and you will not . In order to allow the implementation of our new distribution schedule , it was necessary for us to combine our scheduled editorial focus for July with August ’ s editorial focus . This has allowed us to produce one issue with the planned themes for both months , packaged together as the August issue . I reiterate , we are not skipping the July issue , as the content planned for July is within this issue , as well as that planned for August . This will enable us to get on a new schedule that will allow distribution of each issue up to two weeks prior to the first of the month . For example , you are now holding the August issue , which was released on July 20 . September ’ s issue will release August 15-20 , October releases September 15-20 , and so on .
With the added distribution area of Columbia / Sumter / Camden , as well as the Pee Dee and Grand Strand , it has become important that we begin distribution earlier in order to cover our vast area that includes over 800 locations .
Each change of season brings with it such excitement and opportunity for change . This issue ’ s Annual Salute to Women in Education has been especially inspiring to me , as the stories we ’ ve collected from women regarding their “ most inspiring teachers ” have been the most powerful in the fifteen-year history of this issue .
Having my own personal experience with a teacher who spoke words to me that were life-changing , I understand profoundly the impact that a teacher can have on the lives of young students .
I am proud to be able to bring you this Salute to Women in Education issue , and I invite you to join the conversation on our Facebook ® page by sharing your “ most inspiring teacher ” story .
Teachers , as you head back to class this year , know that your hard work and dedication are appreciated . Summer , however , is not over yet . There are plenty of lazy , summer days left of which to savor . Make the most of every one of them , for as fall fades into winter , these are the memories that will sustain us through the winter months that lie ahead .
Thanks for reading . . . It ’ s a woman thing !
