Starla Shelton
PFFCU, VICE PRESIDENT OF OPERATIONS

ith this issue being a celebra-
tion of women in education, it
is interesting to note that Starla
Shelton would give credit to a
teacher for helping her to see the
possibilities of her future. Starla’s experience is evidence
of the power that educators have to influence the lives
of the young people who sit in their classrooms every
day. Starla’s defining moment came in the tenth grade at
South Florence High, as she remembers, “Mrs. Shelton’s
class with Mrs. Shelton being no relation to Starla’s future
husband was always a significant memory for me because
of a conversation that Mrs. Shelton and I had. My mem-
ory is a little hazy about what we were doing at the time,
but I remember having to fill out a paper which asked
questions about our future plans. One of the questions
asked what we wanted to do after high school. I answered
that I wanted to do some sort of clerical work/work in an
office. Mrs. Shelton called me up to her desk and asked
me why I answered as I did. I told her that I just wanted a
job where I could dress up.”
