Welcome to the June edition of SolTalk , yes summer is finally here and soon we will be more than doubling the population of Nerja with visitors , that ’ s just judging by the parking anyway !
I am writing on the day after the horrendous and cowardly attack on innocent men , women and children in Manchester . I was reminded of what the Dalai Lama had to say about terrorism last year :
“ Buddhist terrorist . Muslim terrorist . That wording is wrong ,” he said . “ Any person who wants to indulge in violence is no longer a genuine Buddhist or genuine Muslim , because it is a Muslim teaching that once you are involved in bloodshed , actually you are no longer a genuine practitioner of Islam . All major religious traditions carry the same message : a message of love , compassion , forgiveness , tolerance , contentment , selfdiscipline - all religious traditions .”
Our thoughts are with all the victims , their friends and families and the brave emergency workers who rush into these situations to help others , regardless of their own personal safety . A sobering day for the UK and the world .
Often in such tragedies , they have a tendency to bring out the best in so many people . The news is full of stories of how people left stranded by the tragic events were given a place to stay by strangers and hotels in the area , and people queued up to donate their blood . It reminds us that the majority of people in this world are pretty amazing , which we can forget in the face of such heinous acts .
In another story that has been overshadowed by these events , I read that the actor Roger Moore ’ s children announced his death at the age of 89 in Switzerland , saying : “ he passed away today ... after a short but brave battle with cancer ”.
Roger Moore was one of my heartthrobs all those years ago ( showing my age whoops ) when he was the “ Saint ” and later when he became James Bond - yet another icon we have sadly lost . RIP .
Back to the magazine and we hope you enjoy our “ new look ” as much as we do . There will be a few more changes to come over the following months but as they say , Rome wasn ’ t built in day !
June of course has its fiesta - San Juan on the night of June 23 . The night when people either party on various beaches or indeed camp out all night on them , the only night of the year that this is legal in Spain . Usually Burriana is the place to be if you want a big party with loud music and sardines being cooked in the sand on the beach . For quieter gatherings try some of the other beaches like Playazo which tend towards more family groups . Whatever you do , don ’ t forget to bathe your face and hands in the sea at midnight for good luck - and enjoy !
We hope you enjoy this issue of SolTalk , have a great June .
