Special Olympics GB National Games – Sheffield Special Olympics Great Britain has chosen the city of Sheffield to host the 10th National Games. It will be the largest sports event to take place in GB for people with an intellectual (learning) disability. They are a major undertaking involving many months of planning, organisation and fundraising. They involve the recruitment and training of a large number of volunteers and officials. Also at Special Olympics GB’s Opening Ceremony will be James Toseland – former double World Superbikes Champion turned rock music artist – who will be performing ‘We’ll Stop at Nothing’, the 2017 Official Special Olympics National Summer Games Anthem. The song has been released with all profits going to the charity to support athletes with learning disability. This will be the second time that the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games have been held in Sheffield – the last time was in 1993. Iconic singer Tony Hadley from 80s New Romantic group Spandau Ballet will be headlining at the Opening Ceremony for the games on the evening of Tuesday 8th August at Continued on page 54 45
