A great rule of thumb is when the surface water temperatures are over 80 degrees during the middle of the day, you should fish deeper presentations. Some great techniques to present baits to these deeper dwelling fish are Carolina rigs, drop-shot rigs, jigheads, and sliding corks. All of these present the bait at the lower part of the water column where the water has higher salinity, cooler temperatures, and more bait. All predator fish will tend to get lethargic during the warmest part of the day if they stay on the shallower flats and reefs, but if they locate themselves in deeper waters, their metabolism remains steady and they will tend to feed longer and more aggressively. August is a month when many anglers have a tough time locating good numbers of fish because they fish shallow where there are only a few stragglers that tolerate the warm waters; but if you just think about where fish would move to locate themselves in cooler water, right at your same familiar “spot” or structure, you’ll find that your catch will increase substantially from past trips, even during the heat of the summer!
