Soweto
Located on the outskirts of Johannesburg, Soweto is South Africa’s largest and most
metropolitan township, setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language.
Soweto is a hub of ultra-modern life depicted by luxury cars, large mansions and expanding
boundaries starkly contrasted by poor areas where primitive life is found, livestock graze
along the roads and ancient African traditions are still practiced.
Known worldwide for its role in the struggle for democracy, Soweto is is a city of enterprise
and cultural interaction. Interesting sites to visit include Kliptown (where the Freedom
Charter was drawn up), the home of former President Nelson Mandela on Vilakazi Street,
the Hector Petersen Museum, the Regina Mundi Church and authentic African cuisine
restaurants.
Music forms a central part of the Soweto experience. Jazz has been at the heart of Soweto
since the 1960s, with performances taking place in local community halls and ‘Shebeens’.
Visiting Soweto is a unique experience and is guaranteed to keep visitors entertained.
