Namibia Since 21 March 1990, Namibia has been an independent Republic. The total population is approximately 2.1 million. The territory has a total surface area of 824 292 qkm. The capital of Namibia is Windhoek and the official language is English. Other languages spoken include Afrikaans, German and the different languages of the Bantu and Khoisan speaking people. In Namibia, traffic drives on the left-hand side of the street. Safety belts as well as a valid, international drivers license with the original drivers license are compulsory. Maximum speeding limits on the different roads are: 60 km/h within all City limits, 120 km/h on tarred Country Roads and 80 – 100 km/h on Gravel Roads. The Road network in Namibia is one of the best in the world and the street signs are international and easy recognized. The speed limits should be taken seriously, as well as all warning signs for local wildlife. In the Kaokoveld and Khaudum regions a minimum number of two vehicles must travel together. For the Caprivi Strip we recommend a 4x4 vehicle, particularly in the rainy season. In principle these vehicles offer a larger flexibility and greater freedom of movement however they require more driving skill knowledge. The Namibian Dollar (N$) and the SA Rand are the only legal tender in Namibia. The exchange rate between the SA Rand and N$ has a 1:1 ratio. In all the major Banks, which are situated in the Independence Avenue, (Standard Bank, Commercial Bank, First National Bank) you can exchange money against the current daily exchange rate. You will require your passport. Major
