Tour – My South Africa DAY BY DAY D1 JOHANNESBURG – SOWETO – JOHANNESBURG (50km – 1 hr) Journey into the soul of South Africa with an intense and emotive tour of Soweto. On arrival at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo Airport, you will be welcomed by your English-speaking local guide and whisked off to the South Western Townships, known the world over as Soweto. Now teeming with more than a million residents, Soweto was a dusty wasteland in 1955 when thousands of anti-apartheid activists gathered to sign the Freedom Charter, which set out their goals. Visit Walter Sisulu Square and see the memorial to this momentous declaration. Head to the Hector Pieterson Museum and learn about this 13year-old boy who was shot by police during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. The photo of his lifeless body became an iconic image and came to symbolise the tyranny of apartheid. Continue to the Regina Mundi Church and see the bullet marks from when the police opened fire on those sheltering inside during the uprising. Visit the Mandela House National Museum, which is located in the humble former family home of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, before continuing to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital – the largest in the world – and the imposing Soccer City Stadium, where the 2010 World Cup final was played. Overnight in hotel in Muldersdrift. Board basis: bed and breakfast. D2 JOHANNESBURG – HAZYVIEW / WHITE RIVER (370km – 7 hrs) Take the Panorama Route from Johannesburg to your accommodation near Kruger National Park and enjoy the drive of a lifetime through the province of Mpumalanga, which means ‘the land where the sun rises’. It is also the land where you will be virtually glued to your window as you travel through some of the most breathtaking landscapes anywhere in the planet. Colourful names such as Echo Caves, God’s Window, Horseshoe Falls and Bourke’s Luck Potholes don’t even begin to convey the raw majesty of the scenery. The lush and beautiful Blyde River Canyon will enchant you while the mountains, gorges, waterfalls and the variety of vistas will leave you awe-struck. There is abundant flora and fauna, and the human footprint can occasionally be spotted – but this is Mother Nature at her wildest and most creative, and the route looks much like it would have to our ancestors. Overnight in Hazyview or White River. Board basis: bed and breakfast. D3 HAZYVIEW / WHITE RIVER – KRUGER NATIONAL PARK (100km – 7 hrs) It’s game time as you begin your two-day quest for sightings of the legendary Big Five in Kruger National Park. In the lore of hunters, five animals are known as the hardest to track down and trap: lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinoceroses – collectively known as the Big Five. But there is much, much more to contemplate in this vast national park, which is larger than 46 of the countries in the world and boasts 49 species fish, 34 of amphibians, 114 of reptiles, 507 of birds and 147 of mammals as well as 336 species of trees. There are more than 250,000 animals roaming this open expanse of savanna – and you will come face to face with quite a few them over the coming two days. During your adventure you may also encounter giraffes, zebras, antelopes, wildebeest, warthogs and more. Overnight in Hazyview or White River. Board basis: bed and breakfast. www.atctravel.co.za 215
