Mozambique Mozambique is a warm country, with beautiful scenery and exotic white sandy beaches . It is comparable in size to Turkey. Located on the southeast coast of Africa, it is bound by Swaziland to the south, South Africa to the southwest, Zimbabwe to the west, Zambia and Malawi to the northwest, Tanzania to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east. It is separated from Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city is Maputo. The archipelagos contain stories and legends that remain respected from one generation to the next. The people are charming and friendly and live life with a passion. Portuguese is the official language, although this is generally only spoken by the more educated amongst Mozambique's population. More than 60 different dialects of the Bantu languages are found in Mozambique. English is generally spoken in hotels and beach lodges. Mozambique crosses the tropic of Capricorn giving the country a range of sub-tropical to tropical climate with plenty of sunshine throughout the year. It is seldom cold. The average temperature is around 28°C and is characterized by seasonal rains between November and April , when the humidity is high. Mozambique's currency is the metical (MZM). Most hotels and lodges in Mozambique accept US$, South African Rand and credit cards. Foreign currency can be exchanged in commercial banks , large towns and cities. Most roads in towns are in reasonable condition, however 4x4 vehicles are required in rural areas and to access remote lodges and hotels. The Mozambique power grid uses 220/240 volts AC 50 Hertz; wall sockets (round and square 3 pin) are rated to carry a maximum of 15 amps. It is advisable to bring your own 3 pin round and square adapter, as this is unobtainable in Mozambique.
