London’s 10-11 Carlton House
Terrace, part of the Searcys
collection, hosted the British
Academy Soirée recently, as the
association celebrated cuttingedge thinking in the humanities
and social sciences.
The event was attended
by influencers such as Lord
Mervyn King and the former
Archbishop of Canterbury Lord
Rowan Williams, and used
every room in the venue. Six
hundred people heard pop-up

talks from British Academy
Fellows, viewed poster exhibits
from research award-holders
on a range of subjects including
human rights, philosophy,
international relations,
psychology and history.
“The British Academy Soirée
is a high profile event that
perfectly captures cutting edge
thinking in the fields of social
sciences and humanities,” said
Clare Arouche, head of business
development at Carlton House
Terrace. The venue is the home
of the British Academy.
One of the more unusual
features of the association’s event
was a performance workshop set
up in the shared garden close to
the venue. Jonathan Bate, the
creator of the stage-version of
Shakespeare in Love, brought
it together before the garden
played host to two other talks.
The British Academy director
of development Jo Hopkins, said:
“The British Academy Soirée
was designed to raise the profile
of the Academy to a high level
invited audience of stakeholders
and opinion formers and to
showcase our beautiful home
on Carlton House Terrace. The
venue’s flexible spaces and the
excellent catering ensured we
could focus on making the event
as successful as it could be. We’re
now planning our 2017 Soirée
and look forward to the event
becoming a regular tradition for
the Academy”.
