His opinion got me thinking. Before we can look to God as our deliverer, we need to look within ourselves and discern the truth about the human condition, which is indeed an ugly affair. Nobody is exempt from the corrupting influence of our own self-serving nature. Given the opportunity and the right circumstances, my personal experience says that all people are capable of bowing to self, even when we think we're above that sort of thing. As the apostle Paul himself said when writing about the frailty of the human condition, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (Rom 7:24).
