Playbook to help journos streamline newsgathering process

AP ’ s new Playbook promises to help journalists not only to plan news coverages but create more efficiency and reduce duplications in the news production process , says Paddy Payne , director , International Business Development , ENPS .
While AP , or Associated Press , is well known for its extensive pool of professional journalists covering world events , the company is also the developer of the ENPS news production system , currently being used by a large number of newsrooms around the globe .
The AP Playbook was created in response to the challenges currently faced by broadcast newsrooms — the growing pressure to produce more accurate news content at faster speed and deployed in as many platforms as possible .
Another reason for the new Playbook , despite the race among news organisations to be the first to break the news , AP noticed the lack of a publishing and content production tool to plan coverage and deploy newsgathering resources more efficiently .
With the news environment also spreading to social media platforms , content producers need improved planning to manage text , video and photo coverage for publishing to social as well as online portals . The Play-

book is designed to be scalable and customisable , depending on the size and resource of the news organisation .
Although it is Web-browserbased , the Playbook also has complementary apps that can run on mobile device platforms .
From managing assignments , content deployment , and even helping news coverage budgets , the Playbook will prove useful to news team managers around the world , Payne adds .
At the moment , the Playbook is still being ‘ road-tested ’ by AP ’ s newsrooms . However , visitors to BroadcastAsia2018 can experience its capabilities at Techtel ’ s booth 4K3- 05 , before it is formally launched to customers worldwide at the upcoming IBC2018 show in Amsterdam this September .

Viewers today not averse to watching TV on small screen

will have 201 million subscribers by 2023 , of which 14 % will come from Asia-Pacific .
Just what , then , is so inherently attractive about Netflix ? “ Let ’ s continue to add content — it ’ s working , it ’ s driving growth ,” said Wells . Nothing surprising there ; content is still king , in spite of the cliché .
In Asia-Pacific , cost is also a factor , regardless of which angle you are looking from . With piracy still rampant in the region , some consumers remain reluctant to pay for content — not when they can get it for free , albeit at poor quality .
Paradoxically , Netflix is the prime example of how consumers around the world , including Asia-Pacific , are still willing to pay for premium content — at a price , when compared to many fixed pay-TV packages .
And there is another factor , one that is arguably of most concern to traditional broadcasters and pay-TV operators . While the TV set remains a key fixture in many households , changing lifestyles and increasingly sophisticated mobile devices mean that viewers today are not adverse to watching entire TV programmes on the ‘ small screen ’.
This month ’ s FIFA World Cup is highly informative when it comes to gauging viewers ’ acceptance of video streaming . According to FIFA ,

world football ’ s governing body , the 2014 FIFA World Cup broke online streaming records worldwide . Forty FIFA Media Licensees booked around 120 multimedia services for match coverage , while the FIFA World Cup “ white-label ” second-screen app was downloaded more than 10 million times in more than 20 broadcast territories .
If this trend is matched or , indeed , surpassed this year , it would lend further credence to the argument that viewers are shifting towards nonlinear viewing ; or at the very least , indicate that they are as comfortable consuming content on their mobile devices as they are on their TV sets .
How traditional operators address this growing trend , aligned with high-quality content and competitive pricing , may well go a long way towards preventing them from being mere footnotes in the new TV history that the likes of Netflix are continuing to write .
