that the technology is maturing . Nevertheless , we estimate that about 40 % of the equipment installed in these new facilities is still SDI-based , thus requiring a lot of gateways . Most of those projects are happening in North America and Europe , but Asia-Pacific is catching up and many small / medium-sized IP projects have started .

This year , we will see a lot more IP-native equipment and there will only be more IP every year until we have almost phased out SDI . The fact is , broadcasters cannot say “ Thanks , but no thanks ” to IP as this is where the industry is headed . Last year at BroadcastAsia , Embrionix , along with a few other manufacturers , was part of the Inter-Op Lab organised by APB . We showed our IP solutions , most of which were gateways . So , saying no to IP on a new design might make the design obsolete in the first place .

The value of investing in IP today is about so much more than increasing revenue or reducing cost ; it is about acquiring knowledge in order to prepare for the future .

What do you think are some of the key factors that will help broadcasters make a successful transition to IP ? Pare : IP is merely the first step towards virtualisation , and all of this virtualisation will happen over IP networks . So , the first step is definitely to get rid of SDI signals . Again , this will not happen overnight . Broadcasters , manufacturers and systems integrators all have to work together , learn , adapt and tweak solutions to make them work . That is the challenge this transition is posing .

Within that spirit , Embrionix has a unique IP expertise that it applies to its product development , and in particular to its IP SFPs , which are designed to be so much more than gateways . These miniaturised devices with IP ( SMPTE ST2110 ) software- defined applications comprise 4K / UHD IP processors , multiviewers , up / down / cross-converters , frame synchronisers , gateways with clean and quiet switching and , of course , hitless redundancy ( SMPTE ST2022-7 ) and more .

Up to four of these micro-services can reside simultaneously within each SFP . And each device fits directly into commercial-off-the-shelf ( COTS ) switches , enabling broadcasters to reduce their equipment footprint , power consumption , cooling and cabling .

As more IP-native equipment becomes available , broadcasters can repurpose , instead of decommissioning , their Embrionix SFPs , equipping their facility with an arsenal of processing capability . It is solutions such as these that help smooth the IP transition now while paving the road towards a fully virtualised environment .

Can you elaborate on some of the other products Embrionix is offering to help broadcasters make this transition ? Pare : If you are looking to migrate to IP , you will want to start with an IP core deployment that consists of a spine and leaf-type architecture ,

In order to interface with surrounding source and destination media devices that are not yet IP native , Embrionix develops and sells products for converting hitless SDI ßàIP ( SMPTE ST2110 , ST2022-6 ) and ASIßàIP ( ST2022-1 / 2 ). We have developed compact , lightweight and high-density SDI-IP products in an interchangeable SDI-IP SFP form factor that can be installed inside an SFP cage hosted by other equipment manufacturers , inside COTS equipment , or within our own 1RU aggregation frame .
