expanded efforts to enhance the digital readiness of SMEs ( small and medium enterprises ), which hire 70 % of our workforce and contribute to nearly half of our GDP ( gross domestic product ),” he said , referring to the ‘ SMEs Go Digital ’ programme he had announced two months back .
Beyond developing infrastructure , manpower and other enablers for Singapore ’ s digital vision , the need has also been felt to build a strong infocomm media foundation to support the country ’ s digital transformation .
“ To build this foundation , IMDA has identified four frontier technology focus areas to invest and build capabilities in ,” said Dr Yaacob , identifying these exciting fields as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science ; Cybersecurity ; Immersive Media ; and Internet of Things ( IoT ) plus Future Communications Infrastructure .
“ IMDA has worked with production company , Beach House Pictures , to pilot the use of virtual reality ( VR ) in Social Studies for five primary schools ,” the minister said . “ Beach House Pictures also collaborated with local startup Hiverlab to develop a customised VR classroom application for teachers to guide students on VR experiences around

AJA showcasing FS-HDR for workflow conversion

A product specifically designed to meet the HDR ( high dynamic range ) and / or WCG ( wide colour gamut ) needs of broadcast , OTT ( over-the-top ), post and live event audio-visual environments , the new FS-HDR universal converter / frame synchroniser addresses a crying need .
“ In situations where real-time , low-latency processing , colour fidelity and metadata handling are of paramount importance , the FS-HDR fits the bill to a nicety , and delivers HDR workflow conversion capabilities ,” says Robert Stacy , APAC general manager of the California-based AJA Video Systems , which is distributing its products through VSYS ( booth 6F2-01 ).
Building on AJA ’ s flagship FS4 , and incorporating the latest HDR technology from Academy and Emmy Award-winning developer Colorfront , the 1RU , rack-mount FS-HDR provides HDR and WCG processing and conversion for real-time 4K / UltraHD ( UHD ) and 2K / HD workflows and 4K / UHD HDR down-conversion to high-definition HDR .
The FS-HDR is powered by Colorfront Engine , and enables the conversion of popular camera formats from multiple vendors into the HDR space , plus conversion to and from BT . 2020 / BT . 709 as needed . This is critical for the widespread acceptance of HDR , alongside SDR in broadcast and OTT workflows .
“ Our AJA FS family of products has been incredibly popular in delivering ultra-reliable video and audio conversion needs for anything that comes up on-set , in an OB truck , at a facility or in a live event production scenario ,” says Stacy .

“ It is actually an economic drive for broadcasters to move to IP because it will allow broadcasters to utilise more common-offthe-shelf ( COTS ) equipment , which are cheaper compared to paying for a baseband infrastructure .”
He also maintained that implementing IP should involved all staff , right from the top to the technicians — and not just some engineers wanting IP .
Another driver for broadcasters to implement IP-based solutions is that it enables them to tap into the cloud , said Fintan Mc Kiernan , CEO , Ideal Systems South-east Asia . “ One of the benefits the cloud will have for an IP broadcaster is that they would not have to worry about the obsolesces of their equipment . That ’ s a driver , and its certainly going to be a very h-igh jump from an SDI environment to cloud environment .”
And while some broadcasters might be looking into procuring IP-based equipment to “ future-proof ” themselves , they also have to fulfil the return-on-investment ( ROI ) for their legacy SDI systems . Hence , hybrid SDI / IP systems will represent the best option for many for a number of years to come .
Stan Moote , CTO , IABM , highlighted that “ SDI will not die , but will slowly fade away ”,
The panel discussion was streamed live to screens in the halls and on Facebook .
and suggested to broadcasters to allocate a portion of the budget and start experimenting IP solutions . “ There will be a lot of IP products available in the market , and it will be good if they could take this opportunity to get themselves familiarise with this technology ,” he advised .
Facilitated by Shawn Liew , managing editor of APB , the panel discussion attracted many who wanted to learn more about IP and also some bystanders visiting the Broadcast IP Inter-Op Lab next door .
