• Continued from page 1
“ Overall , we strive to create an engaging event where the industry can congregate , learn , share ideas and best practices , expand business networks and create meaningful relationships with each other .”
Looking for multi-screen innovations at BroadcastAsia 2017 is Cignal TV , a directto-home ( DTH ) satellite TV service provider based in the Philippines .
“ We are looking for products and equipment that will make our Cignal TV OTT service unique and compelling … and also innovations that may offer opportunities for us to lower the costs of running our satellite , IP and OTT networks ,” says Edward Benedict Galang , first VP and head of engineering and operation , Cignal TV .
For others , such as Sri Lanka ’ s Integrated Media Network ( IMN ), there are more immediate concerns .
Nadin Chathura Ekanayake , head , IT and digital content , IMN , explains : “ The Sri Lanka government has mandated that digital broadcasting will replace analogue broadcasting within the next 2-3 years . As a result , all broadcasters in the country are required to migrate all existing systems to digital .”
A new media startup , IMN aims to be one of the biggest media companies in Sri Lanka by end-2017 , operating three TV channels , four radio channels and three newspapers .
Cignal TV ’ s Edward Benedict Galang : “ We are looking for products and equipment that will make our Cignal TV OTT service unique and compelling … and also innovations that may offer opportunities for us to lower the costs of running our satellite , IP and OTT networks .”

Simplify your workflow

According to Ekanayake , IMN ’ s aims at BroadcastAsia2017 is to check out the latest solutions in automation software , storage and archive systems , camera equipment , as well as post-production solutions .
And here to learn more about the transition to digital terrestrial television ( DTT ) is Nepal Television , which will be implementing “ big projects ” this year in the areas of studio playout , ingest , digital archiving , newsroom computer systems and perhaps , most importantly , the implementation of four HD studios .
Deepak Mani Dhital , deputy general manager , Nepal Television , says : “ The main challenges of implementing DTT include how to distribute set-top boxes and provide valueadded services , and how to deal with new media for traditional broadcasters like us .”
Indeed , BroadcastAsia has become a veritable marketplace to source for ideas , solutions and innovative broadcast equipment .

only 27 % of traditional broadcasters now obtain 80 % -100 % of their revenues from traditional sources — a continuing downward trend from 35 % from 2013 .
By 2020 , the percentage is expected to fall to just 15 %.
White says : “ Millennials are watching 25 % less TV , while their consumption of OTT has increased by 400 %, and they will soon be spending more hours watching OTT than TV .”
The key in addressing the march to OTT lies with the business model , he advises . “ Netflix reported a 6 % return in 2016 , and it seems likely that Amazon is operating at a loss at present .
“ In contrast to this , typical broadcaster margins have historically been in the 10 % - 40 % range .”
Therefore , as well as segmenting their OTT audiences into ‘ marketable ’ groups with the use of advanced data techniques , broadcasters will do well to look to the cloud to provide the operational economies that will enable them to profit from OTT activities , White recommends .
Moreover , it would appear that broadcasters are already heeding this advice , with 85 % of respondents to the IABM April 2017 end-user survey reporting that they are already operating in the cloud or are likely to do so over the next two to three years .
An emerging technology that is catching IABM ’ s eye , and which is already being tapped to help broadcast and media companies understand and react to their audiences ’ individual needs is artificial intelligence ( AI ).
“ About 43 % of our end-user survey respondents say they are likely to use AI in the next two to three years .
“ Netflix reports that it has already saved US $ 1 billion through the use of AI in its recommendation engines , and other obvious applications are advertising recommendations , search and metadata labelling , as well as optimising network management ,” White concludes .
