IP at the heart of SAM ’ s strategy for broadcast industry , says Wong

2017 promises a number of key announcements for broadcast IP , notably where standards and interoperability are concerned . As SAM celebrates its second anniversary this year , how has the IP transition impacted or shaped the company ’ s philosophy on software-defined platforms and IP solutions ? Stephen Wong : IP is central to SAM ’ s strategy and we are proud to be involved in several industry firsts , including the first IP remote live production facility built , and the most advanced fully IP outside broadcast ( OB ) truck currently being deployed .
Having said that , customers do need to be clear about their technology strategy as IP may not always be the most cost-efficient solution for their needs .
Joseph White , regional sales manager , Asia and Africa , Miller Camera Support , points visitors to the direction of the arrow Fx .
As the transition to IP begins to gain momentum , Snell Advanced Media ( SAM ) intends to be a leading partner to broadcasters around the world . Stephen Wong , SVP of Sales , Asia-Pacific , reveals more while welcoming visitors to visit SAM at booth 6M2-01 .
Where IP makes sense today is if you want to move to a distributed production model . This is because IP allows you to be much more flexible in how resources are allocated on a project-by-project basis . The other area IP makes sense is if the customer has committed to multiple 4K / Ultra HD ( UHD ) production / channels , either with OB or studio productions . IP allows much higher signal density in any given space and in OB , there is considerable weight savings available by removing all the SDI cabling and a large SDI router .
The easiest way to migrate to IP is by working in a mixed environment of SDI and IP and this allows customers to control their costs / risks and is the central message from SAM — we will help you migrate at the speed that suits your business .
Similarly , software-defined platforms make sense in certain cases . With the constant drive for greater efficiency and flexibility , being able

row Fx series features high-resolution magnetic encoders integrated into each fluid head . The arrow Fx can precisely monitor and communicate , in real time , the exact position of the fluid head with zero latency , says Miller .
The arrow Fx also features an Augmented Reality Interface ( ARI ) box , which works between the arrow Fx fluid heads and real-time graphics engines provided by the likes of Vizrt and Orad . The interface provides accurate real-time pan , tilt , zoom and focus data , as well as lens geometry information , to create life-like precision augmented productions .
Designed in collaboration with the Ronford Baker Engineering Company , the Skyline 90 fluid head supports payloads of up to 75kg ( 165 lb ) and features a “ robust , heavy duty construction ”.
It offers continuous counterbalance control that ranges from zero to 75kg ( 165 lb ) at 30cm ( 12- inch ) above the centre-tilt axis and 15 + 0 selectable fluid pan-tilt drag positions to ensure the optimum drag for any lens focal length .
Calling the introduction of the arrow Fx and Skyline 90 fluid to Asia a milestone for the company , Joseph White , regional sales manager , Asia and Africa , invites visitors to find out more at booth 4K3-05 . to test new services or markets without huge infrastructure investments is very valuable to many of our customers . More importantly , they can then be taken down with very little capital requirement . SAM has a range of products that serve this purpose , offering a cost-effective offering with zero compromise on quality and functionality .
There is clearly still a case for SDI , as demonstrated by SAM ’ s highlight of its 12G-SDI product range this year . What advice can you offer broadcasters looking to deploy hybrid IP / SDI infrastructures ? Wong : SAM is very much focused on helping our customers migrate to new technologies and higher resolution workflows in a way and at a speed that suits them . With 12G-SDI support , SAM is providing an alternative route to 4K / UHD migration that suits the particular business needs of some of our broadcast and OB customers .
In certain sectors , OB and flyaway in particular , SDI is a known and understood technology . What we ’ re allowing these customers to do is handle 4K / UHD signals on a single coax cable , without disrupting existing operational practices , but delivering greater efficiency .
Ultimately , whether 12G-SDI is suitable is very much a decision for our customers . Our role as a vendor is to help make their business strategy a reality .
IP can also be a real consideration for live 4K / UHD production ,

Miller Camera Support Equipment is inviting visitors to check out its new range of arrow Fx fluid heads and the Skyline 90 fluid head .
An extension of Miller ' s new arrow x line of fluid heads , the arwhich SAM is also discussing this year . What can visitors expect at the SAM booth that supports these workflows ? Wong : SAM is continuing its innovation in 4K / UHD and high dynamic range ( HDR ) with the launch of HDR file-based conversion products . These include Format Fusion4 HDR conversion in the Kahuna production switcher line-up and support for 4K / UHD and HDR conversion in the midrange KudosPro and UHD1000 products .
SAM is also showing its new IP products , which use 40 , 25 , 50 and 100GbE interfaces . New 12G-SDI solutions give customers the most flexibility when it comes to making investment decisions for 4K / UHD projects .
SAM is demonstrating its modular infrastructure and conversion solutions , and is highlighting 4K / UHD to SD support for IP and SDI , along with integrated SDI and IP routing control and flexible IP / SDI I / O for routing , switching , conversion , multiviewers and monitoring .
