Stating that Singapore offers a variety of environments to conduct trials
in a real-life setting, Yaacob announced
the launch, next month, of a new
Green Wi-Fi pilot project at Sentosa
that would use solar energy to power
outdoor Wi-Fi, thereby being costeffective and environment-friendly.
“Traditionally, deploying Wi-Fi
outdoors has been difficult and costly
due to the trenching works required;
as such, most of the Wireless@SG
hotspots are indoors,” he said. “If this
pilot is successful, we could potentially
expand Wireless@SG to reach more
outdoor areas in a sustainable manner,
and bring the public Wi-Fi coverage in
Singapore to the next level.”
Yaacob said that another principle
that would take Singapore a step closer
to becoming a Smart Nation would be
to embrace technology in a converged
manner to tackle the country’s challenges.

One of Singapore’s major goals is to be
the world’s first Smart Nation — and,
in line with that target, the government launched the Infocomm Media
2025 plan last year, to build a globally
competitive infocomm and media ecosystem in the city-state.
“Singapore is positioning itself for
the future — one which is increasingly
digital, and where infocomm and media are converging,” said Dr Yaacob
Ibrahim, Minister for Communications and Information, at the opening
ceremony of imbX2016, the umbrella
event that encompasses BroadcastAsia,
CommunicAsia and EnterpriseIT, at the
Sands Expo and Convention Centre
yesterday.

something we must continue to embrace. We welcome companies, both locally and internationally, to treat Singa­

and commercialise new technologies,

Measat’s 4K/UHD HDR demonstration adds colour to show
Together with partners Ateme,
BBright, MStar Semiconductor
and Newtec, Measat is holding a
live-over-satellite demonstration
of 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) with high
dynamic range (HDR).
John Loke, VP, network engineering
and operations, Measat, invites
visitors to check out a live-oversatellite demonstration of 4K/Ultra
HD with high dynamic range.

The demonstration is
HEVC/H.265-encoded at 50fps
with 10-bit colour depth, and
broadcast with DVB-S2X at
25Mbps. The feed is then delivered via the Measat-3a satellite
located at the 91.5°E orbital slot.
Measat believes that HDR
“dramatically improves” picture
quality with a wider range of
richer colours, brighter whites

and deeper darker blacks, giving pictures a more exciting and
“dynamic look”.
