Managed services and best
practices from the region
BY MARTIN COLEMAN
At this year’s CommunicAsia2016, I
am joining a panel to discuss managed services and best practices
from the region. Satellite is increasingly competing with other communication services and a growing
consumer appetite for the content
they want, when and where they
want it. However, we are in a period
of fantastic innovation within the
satellite industry, with a continuous
stream of new developments and
technologies.
With a growing number of
data-hungry applications and services being delivered via satellite,
there is a growing need to deliver
these at a lower cost per Mbit to
enable providers to deliver more
and compete effectively in this
evolving market. This increased demand means that over the coming
years we will see High Throughput
Satellite (HTS) being used for a
large proportion of these services.
The dynamics of HTS will alter
the entire satellite ecosystem. We
will see a growing focus on speed
rather than bandwidth, and a
plethora of different services coming on board with HTS. HTS may
also lead satellite operators to have
to change their business models to
handle multi-beam coverage.
This may lead to the emergence of more satellite operators
beginning to provide the extra
infrastructure themselves. It will be
an interesting point to discuss during the panel, particularly where
that will leave service providers.
