broadcast technology trends and insights 2015 Caton Technology brings live and files transmission over open Internet solution BY CHANDLER WANG When it comes to live video transmission over open Internet, there are three most significant challenges for conventional transport protocol (UDP, TCP, and TCP-based protocols such as RTMP, HTTP and FTP), which are the primary reasons of QoS problem for video contribution over public network. n Bandwidth: The bandwidth of uplink (first mile) and downlink (last mile) is usually not guaranteed in a typical Internet scenario. The traffic congestion can occur at any nodes between source and destination, which significantly decreases the Bandwidth Utility Ratio (BUR). For data transfer without time limitation, the transmission rate can be decreased to guarantee the quality, but it is not workable for real-time video, as lower bit rate means lower quality. n Jitter: Jitter is a normal phenomenon caused by network block-up and buffering in routes. Differing from non-real-time data, jitter will cause flaws on decoded pictures and sounds for a live network playing. n Packet loss: Data packet error or lost will break the video quality. UDP cannot handle the case by itself, although it utilises the bandwidth effectively. TCP can improve byte level correction but its BUR is poor; buffering causes higher latency and also higher jitter. QoS problem for live video transmission over open Internet Video Delivery Network (VDN) based on R2TP transport technology is a composite of bandwidth available, quality, latency and jitter. In most cases, solution cannot be found to cover all the factors. However, the market’s need for a flexible, next- generation live video and file transfer technology is pervasive and exploding as data sizes increase, network capacities grow, and users increasingly exchange data and media. R2TP Reliable Real time Transport Protocol (R2TP) is an IP-based transport protocol designed to solve the QoS/QoE problems for live video transmission over Internet. A creative congestion control technique is used to avoid the flaws caused by TCP and TCP-like protocols. R2TP maximises the BUR, allowing users to deliver higher quality content in a given bandwidth. R2TP invents high-effective error recovery mechanism, and improves stability and reliability by implementing a clock synchronisation-based ARQ method to make error recovery mechanism more effective. With its algorithm-based packets gap and network parameters, the R2TP can detect packet loss at the first time, even in a continuous packet loss scenario. In addition, the BUR of R2TP is distance-independent and will remain at a stable value, even if RTT increases sharply. In some scenarios, customers may have multiple network links available, but none that meets the video streaming or bandwidth requirements. R2TP implements a dynamic multi-path bounding method to satisfy those demands. By implementing an intelligent network load-balancing strategy, R2TP bounds multiple links into a virtual link, and balances the data traffic of each link dynamically, depending on the network conditions. F2TP With the great progress of live video transmission over R2TP technology, Caton Technology has also applied this core technology to the file transfer field as Fast File Transport Protocol (F2TP). F2TP fully utilises the available network bandwidth, moving file- based data at maximum speed, regardless of network conditions, transfer distance and data sizes. This core transport technology can be deployed in a wide range of applications, from high bitrate live broadcast video contribution and distribution to broadcast newsgathering and coverage. It is also applicable for video conference, e-learning and event-based live content delivery platform.
