Sachtler ’ s new Video 18 S2 gives you more for the same price

For decades , the rugged Sachtler Video 18 fluid head has been a staple in camera kits of successful EFP and EB cameramen around the globe . This year , the bestseller has been upgraded to give owners more load-bearing capacity .
Thanks to the new model , the Video 18 S2 , users will now be able to handle a greater load-bearing capacity of up to 20kg at 125mm centre of gravity , which is 4kg more payload than the Video 18 S1 . With this improvement , the Video 18 S2 is now the only head in its class that can operate at -40 ° C to + 60 ° C without any impact on its smooth operation .
“ The more you can carry on the tripod , the easier it is to function with both the heaviest and the lightest payload . With certain competitors , their tripods can carry a heavier payload , but the minute you try to adjust your parameters to accommodate a lighter one it feels incredibly stiff and cocky ,” comments cinematographer Clinton Harn .
As a cinematographer , filmmaker , producer and audio recording engineer , Clinton Harn has not only shot for two-time Academy Award winner and director Malcolm Clark , but has also worked as an AC and camera operator for Rodney Charters , ASC , who is known for shows such as 24 , Dallas , and
Shameless .
“ This new head just has more control , so while it can accommodate a heavier payload of 20kg , you can still go down to the minimum drag setting of 2kg and put a small DSLR camera on there with no issues . And that ’ s the big difference between Sachtler and a lot of other competitors ,” says Harn .
As the Sachtler workhorse , the Video 18 has a rich heritage with thousands of heads in the field and decades of robust performance in the most extreme news and documentary environments around the world . Every microscopic feature of the Video 18 S2 is designed for the tough , daily challenges of news and documentary film crews , whether it is thrown into the back of a news truck every day or burrowed into mud and sand .

2015 Scientific Exploration Society Zenith Explorer — is a professional wildlife photographer , filmmaker and presenter whose first solo assignment for National Geographic debuted earlier this month . This 24-part series — shot in 4K with the Sony FS7 using Canon EF 200-400mm f / 4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lenses , all supported by the Sachtler Video 18 — follows Gregory on a three-month wildlife adventure where he tracked down the elusive coastal wolf on the West Coast of Vancouver Island , Canada .
With unpredictable tides , landscape and weather conditions in this uninhabited , temperate rainforest , Gregory was very selective about both his survival equipment and shooting gear . So to get those cinematic shots , he relied on the Sachtler V18 to provide all the lightweight , robust functionality he needed .
“ For the past year-and-a-half , I ’ ve been using the Sachtler V18 . I ’ ve taken it in little boats and big boats , put it in salt water and sand to get water-level shots , had it in rivers and carried it 30km a day for 10 days . In the past , I ’ ve had tripods where you take it on a windy beach ; the whole thing just fills up with sand , and then I have to take it apart to clean it . I don ’ t know what Sachtler ’ s done with their gear , but whatever it is , it ’ s genius because I never have to worry about doing that .”
And while the Video 18 S2 is optimised in every product detail , it still maintains classic Sachtler features such as temperature resistance , the Touch & Go plate , the parking position for spare camera screws , and the illuminated spirit level .
Every day , content creators such as Harn and Gregory rely on the legacy of the Video 18 ’ s strength and dependability to get the job done . “ These tripods are built to last a lifetime ,” comments Clinton . “ When you combine longevity and futureproof technology , dependability is written all over it . For me , Sachtler simply has those qualities and so much more .”
