Hope. Santa Claus represents , not the toys under the tree (well, that too because toys are cool after all), but the hope that we as human beings can care about others of our kind. Santa Claus represents the possibility that others might care whether or not we are cold, or hungry, or lonely. Santa Claus, in the end, is real because people really do care . . . they just need to be reminded sometimes. And if it takes a fat man in a red coat one month out of the year to jog our memories, then so be it. So yes, I do think Santa Claus is real. He has to be real, because he is the best part of all of us. And I for one am glad that he will always be real. ASHLAND LIVING | WINTER 2018 | 15
