Resident of the Month,
Ruby Hurd
Ruby Hurd
was born on
Jan. 19, 1920
in Walnut
Grove, Mo., to
parents Jess
and Jessie
Leeper. Ruby
had two brothers, Howard and Leonard, and one
sister, Dorotha. Ruby also had twin
sisters who passed at the time of
birth.
Ruby attended Pomona Schools.
After graduation, she received extensive
training at JcPenney’s, where she
worked for 14 years.
Growing up in a small community,
Ruby knew Virgil Hurd from a
young age. The childhood friends
were married on Sept. 11, 1937 in
Pomona, Ca. The couple were blessed
with a family of four children, six
grandchildren and many great-

grandchildren.
Ruby and Virgil bought a farm
between Everton and Greenfield,
Mo. After they losing their first
home in a fire, the couple rebuilt
and lived until 1995.
Ruby attended the Liberty Baptist
Church, located just north of Everton,
where she served in as a vacation
Bible school worker.
Ruby recalls every Saturday night
Ruby, her siblings and their families
would come to her home to play
Dominoes, Pitch and Rook. They
would laugh and eat until they
couldn’t eat anymore. During the
summertime, they would make ice
cream. According to Ruby, those
were the best times ever.
