Resident of the Month,
Mary Armantrout
Mary Armantrout was born in Pearl,
Mo., to Ellis and Lexi Garrett. Growing
up, Mary had seven siblings. Her grand-
mother was a full-blood Cherokee Native
American. Mary attended the Yocom
Country school and graduated from
Willard High School.
In 1941, Mary was married to Edgar
Keck. The couple were blessed with two
sons: Edgar Keck Jr. and James Polk
Keck. Sadly, while serving in the mili-
tary, Edgar passed away in Iwo Jima,
Japan. Luckily, Mary’s mother helped her
raise her boys.
Mary was eventually remarried, this
time to Asa Armantrout. Together, the
couple had two daughters: Linda and
Lisa. In all, Mary has been able to enjoy
seven grandchildren.
For several years, Mary was a member
of the Mt. Pleasant Church, east of Ash
Grove. After she moved to Everton, Mary
joined Everton Presbyterian Church.
Mary spent 14 years working at the
Black Kettle Restaurant. During this time
she also worked at Garment Factory. At
the age of 70, Mary retired from the
Corner Café in Ash Grove, where she

worked as a cook. After her retirement,
she sold antiques for nearly 10 years.
In her free time, Mary enjoys making
quilts, playing cards, visiting with friends
and family, gardening, reading and fish-
ing. Her favorite foods are fresh fish and
chicken.
