Fellows and Junior Faculty
Selected for 2017 ASH
Clinical Research Training
Institute
Twenty hematology and hematology/oncology fellows and junior faculty will participate
in the 2017 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Clinical Research Training Institute
(CRTI), a year-long education and mentoring program designed to prepare participants
for careers in patient-oriented clinical research.
CRTI began August 5 with a week-long workshop in La Jolla, California, supported in
part by the National Cancer Institute and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Participants attended lectures and small-group discussions focused on research questions,
clinical trial design, regulatory issues, and funding. Two subsequent sessions, the first at
the ASH annual meeting in December and the second at ASH headquarters in May, will
provide opportunities for further interaction and mentoring.
For the full list of participants, read the press release at hematology.org/2017CRTI.

Guidelines: Sign up for Updates!
ASH is developing 10 clinical practice guidelines to address the diagnosis
and management of venous thromboembolism. As part of an evidence-
based, transparent process that incorporates diverse stakeholder perspec-
tives, draft recommendations for each guideline will be made available
for public comment.

Annual Meeting Housing Fraud: Look out for Pirates
Pirate housing companies or travel agencies
may solicit you over the phone or via
email and misrepresent themselves as
ASH’s official housing provider. SPARGO,
Inc., is the only official housing provider
for the 59th ASH Annual Meeting and
Exposition.
Deceptive tactics used by pirate
companies may include:
• indicating that the hotel room block
is sold out and that attendees must
book with a company immediately to
secure a room
• distributing forms or promotional ma-
terials that appear to be issued by ASH
• failing to deliver on promises − when
customers arrive, reservations may
be non-existent or hotels may be
inconveniently located
• representing themselves as ASH
affiliates by illegally using ASH’s
name or logo
If you are contacted by a pirate company,
please notify the ASH Housing Center
immediately at [email protected].
