At the 2017 annual meeting , ASH will showcase capacity-building programs in low- and middle-income countries ( LMICs ). Participants are invited to prepare a digital poster that highlights the details and results of their program . Please note that these are different from the annual meeting scientific abstracts ; information should be submitted in poster format , and selected posters will be displayed digitally at the meeting . Poster submission requirements include at least one author must be from an LMIC , presenters must practice in an LMIC , and posters must focus on research or capacity-building initiatives involving populations in LMICs and include analyses of outcomes from the initiative . The submission deadline is July 17 . Please visit hematology . org / globalposters for further instructions .

ASH Announces Physician-Scientist Career Development Award Recipients
The ASH Physician-Scientist Career Development Award program allows students attending accredited medical schools in the United States or Canada to gain experience in hematology research under the mentorship of an ASH member . Two students have been selected for the 2017-2018 academic year . Mara Rosenberg , of the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland , will study next generation sequencing-based minimal residual disease detection assays for patients with leukemia . Max Brodsky , of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia , will explore mechanisms of ruxolitinib resistance in JAK2 / ASXL1 double-mutant myeloproliferative neoplasms .
From July 1 , 2017 , through June 30 , 2018 , they will spend more than 80 percent of their time conducting research and will receive a total award amount of $ 42,000 to help cover the cost of supplies , insurance , and meeting attendance . Marching for Science

The first March for Science , which took place Saturday , April 22 , 2017 , in more than 600 locations around the world , drew hundreds of thousands of people . In an effort spearheaded by the American Society of Hematology ( ASH ), 25 of the world ’ s leading organizations representing clinicians , laboratory researchers , and physician-scientists expressed support for the nonpartisan event . A statement issued by ASH and the other medical societies before the march emphasized the importance of scientific evidence , education , and investment to advance health care :
“ Every day , physicians make the best patient-care decisions they can by relying on science-based tools . Clinicians prevent disease by administering immunizations , and they manage disease by providing therapies that have been thoroughly and scientifically vetted for optimal outcomes . This sciencebased care saves lives , decreases human suffering , and reduces unnecessary costs .”
The statement also expressed the need to protect federal investment in health , including research supported by the National Institutes of Health , which has led to significant medical advances , such as genome editing and immunotherapy for cancer treatment .
