ASH Supports the Call for
a Uniform Subspecialty
Fellowship Training Start
Date
According to the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine’s (AAIM) white paper:
“At present, training programs and their sponsoring institutions vary widely in
the timing of institutional orientation and fellowship/advanced residency training
start dates. Some institutions conduct orientation programs before the scheduled
completion of the initial training program, which leads to conflicts for the resident
between current and future obligations. AAIM believes tha t requiring residents to
report for fellowship before completion of residency training is disruptive to medical
education, creates unnecessary stress for the residents, and risks violating federal
labor laws and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) graduate medical
education funding rules. Adoption of July 1 as the earliest start date for all training
and orientation activities can be endorsed internally by AAIM institutions and would
resolve these conflicts.”
ASH endorses the following recommendations from the AAIM white paper:
1. Adoption, in 2016, of July 1 as the earliest start date, inclusive of all
required on-site program and institutional orientation activities, for subspecialty fellowship in internal medicine and advanced training, for which
internal medicine core training is required.
2. Provision of adequate time for completion of Internet-based orientation
modules after the start of the fellowship training program. Internet-based
orientation modules must not be required to be completed by the day of
orientation. Institutions should be mindful of the time necessary to complete training modules and the impact on the other educational needs of
residents as they complete internal medicine training.
ASH encourages program directors to work within their institutions to end the encroachment of fellowship orientation activities on the completion of residency.
ASH to Recognize Choosing Wisely Champions
Submit Your Nomination
In cooperation with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation,
ASH is introducing a new annual recognition, the “Choosing Wisely Champions.”
Each year, three individuals will be invited to present on successful strategies that they
have developed and implemented in their practice, institution, or hospital system. The
inaugural Choosing Wisely Champions will present their work at the Choosing Wisely
session at the 58th ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego.
The goal of Choosing Wisely Champions is to recognize the efforts of practitioners
who are working to eliminate costly and potentially harmful overuse of common tests
and procedures, and to provide annual meeting attendees with an opportunity to learn
about projects that might be translated to their own practices. ASH will also explore
opportunities to share successful approaches with the hematology community via the
development of toolkits and other materials.
The deadline for submitting an application is June 16, 2016. Self-nominations are
encouraged.

Application Deadline Approaching for
Medical Educators Institute
Apply by April 22 to be a part of ASH’s new Medical Educators Institute
(MEI). This three-day workshop provides hematologists who are new
to medical education careers a “boot camp” in teaching techniques,
fundamentals of medical education research, and career-development
essentials. This competitive training and mentoring program is modeled after ASH’s highly successful Clinical Research Training Institute
in which participants learn from experts and interact with similarly
inclined faculty in a focused, intensive, small-group setting. Participants
will be given the tools they need to excel as educators and role models at
their own institutions and will develop and complete a scholarly project
in hematology education over the year following the program with the
help of an assigned mentor.
